Andre‍w‍‍ Penny

Certified Management Consultant (CMC)

President

I love being outside. Whether it’s on foot, on skis or in a canoe or sailboat – I love all the seasons. And being outside, I really see the changes that are happening to our environment – violent storms, flash floods, droughts, colder cold, warmer warm. This is why I am particularly keen to help get sustainable technologies to market as quickly as possible.

I believe that profitable, well-run businesses are the foundation of a successful society. They create employment, support self-actualization and allow people to come together impactfully. My role with Kingsford is help as many companies as possible to achieve this.

In my career I‘ve worked in almost every vertical market with companies large and small (and many small ones that became large). This broad experience enables me to quickly understand new products and services, and the clients they can serve, and develop effective ways to get them to market.”

Andrew held executive roles with Bell Mobility (launched cellular services in eastern Canada), iSTAR Internet (created Canada's first national ISP), Mitel (expanded PBX sales though global channels), Telesat (created Canada wide presence for satcom services). With Kingsford he advised Lightspeed Commerce through their start-up phase and funding (now valued at close to $3B); developed and delivered an SME training program for Apple's North American independent retail network; worked with YOU-i.tv to develop strategy leading to international market success. Additionally he has helped many European and South American firms enter the North American market place.

Where to play - How to win

He holds a BA (Hon) from Concordia University and an EMBA from the Telfer School of Business at the University of Ottawa. He is an advisor to Sustainable Development Technology Canada, a mentor with Invest Ottawa’s Scale-Up Program and Executive in Residence with the cleantech incubator Foresight Canada.  He is a guest lecturer at the University of Ottawa and past committee chair with the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce. He was presented with Scouts Canada’s Order of the Caribou and is fluent in English and French.

HOW?

You can't penetrate a market with a catalogue of stuff. You have to focus. Most companies serve a local market with a wide range of products and services. You are winning business based on customer proximity. That won't work 5000 km away. Pick the one or maybe two things you are really, really good at – potentially the world's best.…And then you have to test to see if that's true.
