By the time this is in your inbox, I’ll be on my way to Sault Ste. Marie - the first stop on our expedition to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean. It’s a 14,000-kilometre round trip in my 1968 MGB convertible. And what blows most people’s minds is that Edmonton is only ½ way.
And somewhere along the way, the expedition became a bit of a convoy: me, my three sons, and one of their partners.
I’ve had lots of advice - most of it useful - and plenty of suggestions about tools, spare parts, and other gear to bring along. Bear spray, bug repellent, and spare tires have been the most common.
I’ve looked at different routes and stops, communications options and weather forecasts along the way. This is our route: https://maps.app.goo.gl/GQyYrqBe5J7KynZh9
But eventually, you have to say, “Enough Planning”, get in the car and start driving.
It’s the same for many of our clients. We can help them plan, identify opportunities and obstacles, create contingency plans and so on. But at some point, they have to start driving.
So, whatever you’re working on - a new product, new service, new structure or new staffing plan - start driving. It’s much easier, and more profitable, to iterate than it is to create the perfect plan before you begin.
And if you see a 1968 Mineral Blue MGB hammering across - and up - Canada over the next few weeks, say hello!
See you next time,
Andrew
