For those who celebrate it – Happy Canada Day! Even if you are not fortunate enough to be a Canadian citizen, do feel free to celebrate the very fact of Canada. In many ways the world could use a bit more Canada just now.
Here in Canada, we have muddled along quite well for the last 157 years managing to avoid too much controversy and minding our own business. Sure, we’ve done things in the past that we are, in retrospect, not proud of, but we are trying hard to reconcile them.
When called upon to help our neighbours and friends we stood shoulder to shoulder with them around the world - crushing tyrants, fighting fires, and keeping the peace. We did so with vigour and little fanfare. And we will do so again when called upon.
However, we find ourselves in a different spot on this Canada Day 2025.
Some of our neighbours are suffering and acting badly. We know that if we hold true to our beliefs and give them space and time, they will sort themselves out and we will remain friends.
But as Heraclitus said, “you can’t cross the same river twice”. And so, NO, we can’t and won’t go back to the same old way of doing things.
It’s different now.
Canada is looking for more friends around the world. Friends who vigorously uphold the rule of law. Friends who value stable governments that reflect the will of the people. Without this there is no trust, relationships become transactional, and businesses cannot thrive.
Now is the time for Canadian firms to strengthen their business in Canada, while also looking to export markets who are keen to buy Canadian. Expanding sales across Canada is good strategy right now. We can help.
And for overseas companies, Canada is actively diversifying its supplier base away from its traditional supplier – we are hungry for new providers who share our values. We are also in the midst of huge infrastructure investments of all kinds - and need your help. If you want to discuss selling into Canada – contact me please.
I don’t know what our 158th year will bring but I do know that Canada will remain one of the best places in the world to live and do business.
Here’s to a wonderful year full of new friends and new beginnings. Celebrate with us wherever you are!
Happy Canada Day Eh !
See you next time,
Andrew
